Horticultural Extravaganza!

DHHS Main Show - 11 September 2021

After two long years the Society was once again able to host its annual Main Horticultural Show in the Winn Hall on 11 September. With 30 exhibitors and nearly 200 exhibits, the Hall was ablaze with colour. The assortment of vegetables, fruit, floral arrangements, photography and homemade items was something to behold and certainly put a smile on most people’s faces. The Society is grateful for the participation of all the exhibitors and delighted that so many spectators joined us to admire the exhibits. The Winn Hall was buzzing as everyone caught up with friends and neighbours over a cup of tea and slice of cake. Donations from tea and cake alone raised just over £100. Huge thanks to the Show Secretaries and Committee for all their work to organise the event. Mary van der Gaag won Best in Show thanks to her beautiful collection of ‘Flowers from My Garden’. Nigel Hodge once again won the Bob Duly Cup for his outstanding exhibits in the Fruit and Vegetable Class, Antoinette Williams won the Junipers Cup for the Flower Classes, Simone Cunliffe-Lister won the Laura Wells Cup for her container of annuals, Anne Cannings won the Dunsfold Ladies Cup for Cookery and Homecraft, Debbie Annett-Bateman won the Fowles Cup for Floral Art and Peter Hardcastle was awarded the Grattons Cup for Photography. I was delighted to win the Rickhurst Cup for Dahlias, beating out some very stiff competition indeed. We do hope that the buzz in the Hall will translate into more participants in next year’s shows! Watch this space for dates for next year and don’t forget to order those seed and bulb catalogues now, particularly tulips, as they will want to be planted in November.
